While the practice of yoga has been around for around 2000 years, the idea of the hot yoga studio is relatively new. First introduced by Bikram Choudhury in 1970’s and commonly referred to as “Bikram yoga”, this particular methodology requires intense heat as part of the process. In most cases the rooms in which Bikram is practiced are heated to at least 110 degrees, and sometimes more.
Utilizing a hot yoga studio has several advantages. For one, the heat helps to ensure that the muscles are as pliable as possible, which reduces the chances of injury and allows for deeper stretching. It also helps the body eliminate any built-up toxins through active and perfuse perspiration.
The immense popularity of the Bikram method has spawned many Bikram centers around the world. Most major cities in America have at least one hot yoga studio, and most have several. These studios have even begun to pop up in smaller communities as well.
